Spring Bluegills are abundant and very active as they are feeding and preparing for the spawning beds. This is a time of year when you can get some really nice Gills, 8 inches and up.
Top Four Ways For Catching Spring Bluegills
I have been fishing for over 50 years and there is not even a close second on what to use for catching Bluegills in the Springtime. Here I will go through my countdown of the top four ways to catch these tasty eating fish during this time of the year.
#4
Our number four fishing technique is the bobber and warm. This is the least attractive since you are fishing in very shallow water and the Gills are already cleaning up on nymphs, dragonflies, and spiders. You may find the Bluegills won’t even touch a worm. I have seen on many occasions people fishing right next to me with worms and not catch a fish while I have non-stop action. I usually offer them a foam spider to use.
#3
Our number three fishing technique is the Wet Ant. This is an Ant/Fly that sinks slowly in the water. Whether you use it on a Fly Rod or tie it two feet behind a bobber the action ranks third in our top list. The difficulty is recognizing the strike when used on the Fly Rod since there is no bobber or striker. Usage, slowly reel the presentation in two inches, stopping for a few seconds between each pull/reel.
#2
Our number two fishing technique is the 2” Gulp Minnow on a Crappie Hook. Set your depth to 18 inches and work it from 6 inches of water to 3 feet of water. Usage, slowly reel the presentation in two inches, stopping for a few seconds between each pull/reel.
#1
Our number one fishing technique is the Dry Fly. A piece of foam rubber with a hook tied to it. This resembles a floating bug or spider and the Bluegills just can’t resist it. Whether you use it on a Fly Rod or tie it two feet behind a bobber the action is second to none. Usage slowly reel the presentation in two inches, stopping just for a few seconds between each pull/reel.
Recommendation
When fishing for Bluegills in the Spring (May – Mid June) use the dry fly (foam spider). You can buy these or see my video on making your own, but it’s a must. And if you do not use a fly rod then tie it on to your line and use a bobber. Have fun and catch a lot of Fish.
