Cleft Grafting – One & Two Scions
When doing a Cleft Graft you can use either one or two scions. When placing these scions you need to make sure the Cambium layer, which is on the backside of the bark, or the layer between the bark and the wood are making contact. This cambium layer is the life of the tree and it’s this which gives new life to the scion(s).
Cleft Grafting With One Scion
When using one scion you will need to place the scion to one side of the branch (graft), making sure the Cambium layer on the scion is in contact with the Cambium layer with the branch or tree trunk. To make the graft strong and air tight (sealed) I like to use; tree wax, tree wound, parafilm grafting tape, polythene grafting tape and rubber bands.
Cleft Grafting With Two Scions
When using two scions with a cleft graft you will need to place each scion to opposite sides of the branch (graft), making sure the Cambium layer on the scions are in contact with the Cambium layer with the branch or tree trunk.
